Tips on How to Care of Your Organic Pillows

If you’ve taken the leap and bought a natural fibre pillow for your home, you may be revelling in the soft, breathable texture of your new purchase. You might even have already enjoyed a couple of nights of sound sleep. However, you might be wondering how you should clean this type of pillow. Know that kapok and pillows made of other organic fibres do not need much effort to clean.

Yet, don’t throw these pillows into your washing machine and treat them like you would the synthetic types. Know that non-wash cleaning methods are best for organic pillows. In this article, we will share with you several tips on how to keep your pillows free of sweat, dust, and allergens:

Kapok

The first aspect to remember about cleaning a pillow with kapok fibre filling is that you should never wash it. Putting your pillows in the laundry will make the fibre clump for good, resulting in a lumpy surface. Sometimes, the filling might even turn brittle, rendering the pillow useless.

Instead, use a pillow protector underneath your pillowcase. This is because having two layers of fabric will prevent the pillow from absorbing sweat and trapping dust. You can remove the cases and wash those instead, as neglecting to wash cases might cause dust mites to settle in the fabric. Washing the covers once a week is recommended for pillows that are regularly used.

Fluff your kapok pillow regularly as well because the fibres inside will compact over time. As long as you keep it away from moisture and dust, you are sure to get years of great performance from this product.

Natural Latex

This type of pillow is easy to care for. As with kapok, you can protect it using two layers of fabric. Natural latex deters dust minutes, but the cases you use will probably be made of cotton, so you should still wash those weekly. However, be sure not to wash the latex itself.

At the same time, don’t put natural latex in direct sunlight as this causes yellowing and deterioration. On the plus side, you don’t need to fluff this type of pillow; it keeps its shape well for years, and its filler will not need replacing.

Woolly Bolas

Similar to other organic fibres, Wooly Bolas must be protected from moisture and dust. Doubling your fabric, as in the case of kapok and natural latex, is a good way to do this. You should also wash these cases weekly, at least. Because it is a little thicker than the other two fibres, it needs to be occasionally put outside in the sunlight as it helps the material dry more efficiently.

Down or feather

A pillow stuffed with down or feathers will also need a protector and a pillowcase and will require about the same amount of washing as the other types. Although your down pillows will not fall apart if you wash them, it is still not recommended to do so.

If you must, have them dry cleaned or machine washed only once or twice a year. Also, use warm water and mild detergent when washing this type of pillow. Tumble dry on low heat and leave it to air dry for about two to three hours before using.

Conclusion

Your natural fibre pillows are a great investment to ensure your comfort when sleeping. Take care of these by using a pillowcase and a protector, and washing those regularly. When you keep your pillows away from moisture and dust, you’ll surely get to enjoy using them for years.
